14 August: Haiti mobilizes the nation to honour the legacy of the Cayman Woods

Port-au-Prince, August 12, 2025.- On the occasion of the 21st edition of the Nation's Tuesdays, the Haitian government launches the national commemorations of August 14, the founding date of the Bois-Caïman ceremony. The programme includes cultural activities throughout the country, restoration of heritage sites and strengthening the protection of historic monuments in the face of recent attacks.

August 14, symbol of the resistance and emancipation of the Haitian people, will be celebrated this year with an unprecedented national mobilization. During his participation in the 21st edition of the Nation's Tuesdays, the Minister of Culture and Communication, Mr. Patrick Delatour, unveiled the broad outlines of this commemoration placed at the heart of the Nation's Tuesdays.

Music, dance and theatre performances will take place in all regions, reflecting the diversity and cultural richness of the country. At the same time, several major restoration projects are under way, notably in the Citadelle, the Palais Sans Souci, the Chapel of Milot, as well as in old prisons of Jacmel and Cap-Haitien, now intended to accommodate cultural centres.

In a context of arson and vandalism against historic monuments, the Minister stressed the need for greater protection of heritage. Enhanced security measures are put in place, while the Institute for the Protection of National Heritage (ISPAN) carries out a detailed inventory of the buildings affected to guide the interventions.

The government calls on the population to participate actively in these celebrations, in memory of the courage of the ancestors and to affirm the identity and cultural sovereignty of Haiti.
