Health: The shortage of pouches paralyzes blood transfusions

Cayes, September 12, 2025.- At Les Cayes Blood Transfusion Station (PTS), the donors present themselves, but go away with no bags available to collect their blood. This shortage, revealed by Le Nouvellist (11 September 2025), plunges many families into anguish while patients requiring urgent operations are waiting in uncertainty.

Julio, who came to get blood for his wife's caesarean section, saw a brutal response: « There is no pouch available. » The scenario continues tirelessly. Patients from Beaumont, Saint-Louis-du-Sud, or the Grand-Anse make the move, often with their donors, but leave empty hands, the Newlist reveals. Some are sent back to two weeks or even a month. Timelines that are considered unbearable for those with life at stake.

Since 2019, the management of transfusion stations has moved from the Haitian Red Cross to the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), via the National Transfusion Safety Programme (PNST). It is he who must provide the necessary bags for the collection. Without this equipment, the entire system is paralyzed: empty sampling rooms, inactive technicians, and patients abandoned to their fate.

Urgent action
