On the occasion of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, praised the leadership of the Swedish diplomat Dag Hammarskjöld and called for the same clarity of purpose and courage that marked his life.

In a message published on X, Guterres invited world leaders to perpetuate the legacy of the one he described as a leader of exceptional integrity, capacity and conviction.

As a reminder, Dag Hammarskjöld, the Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 to 1961, died at the age of 56 in a crash in the night of 17-18 September 1961, near Ndola, Northern Rhodesia, Zambia.
