New York devotes July 26 to the Haitian Konpa

The New York City Council unanimously adopted, on Thursday 4 December 2025, a resolution declaring 26 July « Haitian Konpa Day », in tribute to the famous Haitian musical genre which this year celebrates its 70th anniversary. This decision underlines the importance of Konpa in the Haitian cultural heritage and its influence within the diaspora.

The measure was introduced by municipal councillor Rita Joseph, representative of the 40th district of Brooklyn and influential figure in the Haitian community. It highlights the contribution of Haitians to New York's cultural diversity and celebrates Konpa as a symbol of unity, collective memory and identity pride.

Now celebrated every July 26, the Haitian Konpa Day will pay tribute to the artists, musicians and cultural promoters who have made this music known internationally. Although symbolic, this initiative marks an official recognition of the city's cultural richness.

This gesture is part of New York's commitment to value its many communities and their heritage. For the Haitian diaspora, this day represents a moment of visibility and institutional recognition for an essential part of its culture.
