Washington, 10 September 2025.- The Organization of American States (OAS) today announced the support of 32 countries for the establishment of an international force dedicated to the fight against gangs in Haiti. This initiative aims to secure the country, facilitate humanitarian aid and prepare for free and transparent elections.
Gang-related violence continues to weaken Haiti and threatens the stability of the Caribbean region. In response to this situation, the OAS and its Member States are calling for coordinated international action to provide direct support to the Haitian authorities and strengthen security.
The 32 countries' joint declaration provides for the transition from the Multinational Security Mission (MSS) to an international force capable of fighting gangs. The signatory countries, including Haiti, the United States and the Dominican Republic, encourage voluntary contributions to the United Nations Trust Fund for the Mission.
Kenya's role was recognized as a leader, while the Bahamas, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and Jamaica were involved in sending staff. At the same time, the SECURE-Haiti platform, led by the OAS, aims to strengthen the capabilities of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) and to support the international mission.
Countries stress the need for a secure environment for humanitarian aid and free and fair elections. They also recall that gang violence threatens not only Haiti, but the stability of the entire Caribbean region.
This international support is an important step for Haiti in its fight against gangs. The expected international force should provide security for the population, support State actions and create conditions conducive to free elections and sustainable development.
