Half of the Haitian population is affected by a food crisis

Nearly 5.7 million people, or about half of the population, suffer from acute hunger, including more than 2 million at emergency levels, according to a report published by the Food Aid Programme (WFP). The crisis is in a context of insecurity, armed violence and deteriorating economic conditions, compounded by a sharp increase in the number of internally displaced persons, estimated at over 700,000.

The situation outlined by WFP is of grave concern. The report also highlights the impact of rising food prices, between 30% and 77% above the regional average, roadblocks and repeated climate shocks. Children are among the most vulnerable, with about 277,000 suffering from acute malnutrition, 125,000 of whom are in severe condition.

In response to this situation, WFP intervenes through emergency actions while working with the Haitian authorities to put in place durable solutions to strengthen the resilience of the people.
