Washington, 22 July 2025.- The Trump administration announced on Tuesday the withdrawal of the United States from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), citing a lack of alignment with national interests and a perceived bias against Israel. UNESCO describes this decision as regrettable.

Washington blames the UN agency for promoting social and cultural causes deemed too ideological, contrary to US foreign policy « America First ». According to Tammy Bruce, spokesman for the State Department, UNESCO « defends an ideological and globalist roadmap » incompatible with US priorities.

The American withdrawal will take effect on December 31, 2026. Tammy Bruce pointed out that admission of the« State of Palestine » as a member had reinforced hostile discourses against Israel within the organization, which, in her view, is a key element in American decision-making.

UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay expressed her deep regret at this decision, while indicating that the organization had been prepared for some time.

As a reminder, the United States had already left UNESCO in October 2017, under Donald Trump's first mandate, for similar reasons. They had returned to the agency in 2023, under the Biden administration, after four and a half years of absence.
