Haitian Bridge Alliance mobilizes Congress to extend the GST of Haitians

United States, February 25, 2026.- The Haitian Bridge Alliance has publicly welcomed, Tuesday, February 24, the initiative led by US MP Ayanna Pressley to extend the Temporary Protection Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals living in the United States.

At the heart of this is a petition for discharge tabled in the United States House of Representatives. This parliamentary mechanism allows, under certain conditions, to circumvent the inaction of a commission and to put a bill directly to the vote in plenary, provided that the required number of signatures is obtained.

According to the organisation led by Guerline Jozèf, 155 members of Congress have already signed the document, including the Democratic minority leader in the House, Hakeem Jeffries. The aim is to reach the threshold of 218 signatures, corresponding to the simple majority necessary to force all representatives to examine the text.

As a result, 63 signatures are still missing to formally initiate the legislative procedure leading to a vote on the extension of the GST. This measure concerns more than 300,000 Haitians currently benefiting from this protection, which allows them to reside and work legally in the United States because of the continuing security, political and humanitarian conditions in Haiti.

For Haitian Bridge Alliance, this mobilization is a decisive step in defending the rights and stability of Haitian families in the United States. The organisation calls on the elected representatives of both parties to support the petition in order to ensure the continuity of this protection deemed essential in the current context.
