Haiti–Colombia: Towards strong security cooperation

Port-au-Prince, July 21, 2025.- Faced with the recognition of the role of the Haitian black generals in the struggle for the independence of Colombia, who have provided arms, ships and assistance to Bolívar and Miranda, President Gustavo Petro commits himself to training specialized Haitian military cadres and gradually equipping troops in the air, land and naval fields.

 

In a message published on his X account (formerly Twitter), the Colombian President welcomed Haiti's crucial contribution: « Colombia's independence was supported by Haiti, whose black generals provided arms, ships and assistance to Bolívar and Miranda. Haitian women have also contributed to their liberation, and the Colombian flag is partly inspired by that of Haiti. », he wrote.

 

In a gesture of historical recognition, Gustavo Petro announced that the Colombian army will train a thousand Haitian soldiers from the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd « We will help save the nation that was the cradle of American freedom »said Mr Petro.

 

These announcements take place 24 hours after his second official visit to Haiti in less than a year, on July 18, 2025. Hosted at Toussaint Louverture Airport, the Haitian government stressed that this displacement marks a common desire to strengthen bilateral relations.
