Washington, August 21, 2025.- A US Federal Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the Trump administration by suspending a decision blocking the end of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for more than 60,000 nationals from Honduras, Nicaragua and Nepal. This shift places thousands of families in the United States for years under imminent threat of eviction.

On Wednesday, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal lifted the blockade imposed in July by a federal judge, who found that the decision of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to terminate the GST could be motivated by a « Racial bias ». By suspending this judgement, judges pave the way for the progressive expulsion of tens of thousands of migrants, many of whom have been legally living in the United States for more than two decades.

The GST, introduced for nationals of countries affected by natural disasters or conflicts, allows them to work legally and temporarily reside on American soil. For beneficiaries, the decision is a shock. « I'm devastated. »said Sandhya Lama, a complainant and mother of two American children, born in Nepal. « My children have never known the country of my origins. » The Committee, which defends the migrants concerned, denounces a decision « devastating » and announces the continuation of the judicial fight.

For its part, the DHS welcomes the « major legal success ». According to his spokesman, Tricia McLaughlin, « the GST was never designed to become a disguised asylum system ». Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem argues that the countries concerned, once struck by Hurricane Mitch (Honduras, Nicaragua) and the 2015 earthquake (Nepal), have today sufficiently « recovered » to welcome their nationals again.
