Washington, February 26, 2026.- On the occasion of the 50th ordinary meeting of the CARICOM Conference of Heads of State and Government, held in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé about the security crisis in Haiti.
The meeting was held on the margins of the work of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which brings together regional leaders to discuss political, economic and security issues affecting Member States. The situation in Haiti, faced with a rise in the strength of armed groups, occupied a central place in the exchanges, according to a tweet from the American Embassy in Haiti, this Thursday, February 26, 2026.
During this interview, Marco Rubio stressed the urgent need to restore order and neutralize the gangs he called terrorists. He reaffirmed the commitment of the United States to support efforts to restore stability and security in Haiti, including through support to the Gang Law Enforcement Force and international initiatives in support of national security forces.
The head of US diplomacy also warned that Washington intends to prosecute any person or entity providing direct or indirect support to armed groups. In particular, he referred to the responsibility of certain political actors suspected of corruption and complicity in the destabilization of the country, stressing that measures could be taken to hold them accountable.
This meeting illustrates the desire of the United States to keep the Haitian question at the heart of regional priorities, in a context where the international community is increasing calls for a coordinated response to persistent insecurity.
