Moscow, 31 July 2025.- A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit the coasts of Kamchatka in Russia on Wednesday, causing several injuries and considerable damage. Despite this natural disaster, Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack on Kiev from the dawn of Thursday, July 31, causing significant damage.
The epicentre of the earthquake was located off Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, on the Kamchatka peninsula. Tsunami waves of 10 to 15 metres have been reported in some coastal areas. The Russian authorities foresee replicas up to a magnitude of 7.5 and do not exclude other tsunamis.
Despite this situation, the Russian army continued its military operations in Ukraine. The attack on Kiev resulted in at least six deaths and dozens of injuries. For Ukrainian diplomacy, this offensive proves that it is « time to exert maximum pressure on Moscow ».
In addition, the Klyuchevskoy volcano erupted after the earthquake, and a state of emergency was established in the Kurile Islands, also affected by a tsunami. Floods have been reported in Severo-Kurilsk, the main port in the region, as well as electricity cuts. However, no major damage was recorded, but tsunami warning remains.
