Public universities: the Great North receives unprecedented support from the FNE

Cap-Haitien, September 6, 2025.- On Saturday 6 September, the National Education Fund (NEF) signed funding protocols in Cap-Haitien totalling 58 million gourdes with six public universities in the Far North. Purpose: To renovate, equip and modernize university infrastructure to improve the reception and learning conditions of students from the start of academic year 2025–26.

A strategic meeting in Cap-Haitien

Meeting under the auspices of the FNE Directorate-General, the heads of public universities in the Far North have defined their priorities for infrastructure and equipment. At the end of this working session, six institutions benefit from unprecedented support: University of the North in Cap-Haitien (UPNCH), University of the North-East in Fort Liberté (UPNEF), University of North-West Public in Port-de-Paix (UPNOPP), University of the Centre Public (UPC), University of Artibonite in Gonaïves (UPAG), University of Bas Artibonite in Saint-Marc (UPBAS)

The funding will include the construction and renovation of classrooms, the establishment of scientific and computer laboratories, the acquisition of university furniture and modern teaching materials, and the installation of solar energy systems to guarantee energy autonomy on several campuses.

Concrete needs, targeted support

Each institution submitted a detailed list of its needs. The UPNCH provides for the construction of new classrooms and the acquisition of an industrial generator; The UPNEF aims at the renovation of its campus and the construction of an administrative block; The UPNOPP focuses its efforts on the extension of its teaching spaces and the rehabilitation of its computer lab; The UPAG gives priority to the installation of a laboratory of experimental sciences and interactive digital tables; The UPC plans to build an administrative block and strengthen its library; While UPBAS provides for 500 new desks, installation of solar panels and redevelopment of its library.

These investments demonstrate the NSF's willingness to adapt its support to the specific realities of each public university in the region.

A few days earlier, on Thursday 4 September 2025, the FNE had already brought together the rectors of the public universities of the Great South (South, South-East, Nippes and Grand-Anse). As a result of these discussions, 52 million gourdes had been allocated to finance priority projects, including the establishment of laboratories, the extension of classrooms, the establishment of solar networks and the strengthening of educational facilities.

These two initiatives illustrate a coherent government strategy to strengthen higher education in all regions of the country, ensuring more equitable access to knowledge and modernized university infrastructure.
