Paris, 9 September 2025.- President Emmanuel Macron appointed Sébastien Lecornu Prime Minister on Tuesday 9 September following the resignation of François Bayrou. « I trust Sébastien Lecornu to lead our government in this delicate time »declared the Head of State. The new Prime Minister will soon have to stabilize the executive and face economic and social challenges.
Sébastien Lecornu, 39 years old and a trained lawyer, has established himself as an early figure in French political life. Former mayor of Vernon, president of the department of Eure and briefly senator, he has since occupied several ministerial portfolios: Ecological Transition, Territorial Communities, Overseas and, more recently, Armed, which have forged him a reputation as a pragmatic and experienced manager.« I am committed to working for all the French »he said, while President Macron expressed his confidence in leading the government.
The appointment came after the rejection of the 2025 budget, which led François Bayrou to leave Matignon. The cornu must now convince a fragmented National Assembly. His general policy speech is expected in the coming days, a decisive step in gaining the confidence of Members.
Political reactions illustrate tension: Jean Dupont (LR) critical « a simple change of face that does not solve the crisis « , while the Socialist Party calls for » dialogue and constructive negotiations « . Macron's supporters, on the other hand, advocate a strong choice: » The cornu has experience in carrying out reforms », stressed the Minister of Economy, Mr Eric Lombard.
With Sébastien Lecornu in Matignon, Emmanuel Macron hopes to revive his quinquennium. But the new Prime Minister can only succeed by gaining parliamentary support and building a political consensus around his reforms.
