Washington, 13 July 2025.- On the occasion of the 4th anniversary of the major mobilizations in Cuba, the United States announced sanctions against several senior Cuban leaders, including President Miguel Díaz-Canel, Minister of Defence Álvaro López Miera, and Minister of Interior Lázaro Alberto Álvarez Casas. These measures include the cancellation of their visas.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that these sanctions target Cuban officials and their accomplices for their role in the repression of the people. He also announced that the hotel « Torre K » was added to the list of restricted sites to prevent US funds from supporting the regime.
Mr. Rubio denounced the waste of resources by the authorities, while the population suffers from food shortages, water, medicines and electricity. He also called for the release of all political prisoners.
In addition, this week, the United States extended its sanctions to other countries and personalities, including Francesca Paola Albanese, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories.
It is targeted for collaboration with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in actions to investigate, arrest or prosecute United States or Israeli nationals.
