Port-au-Prince, 10 September 2025.- The Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) and the Office of the State Secretary for Literacy and Non-Training Education (BSE-AENF) have launched a national programme to literate 1.5 million Haitians, involving 50,000 instructors and integrating education into the digital age. The announcement was made on Monday 8 September on the occasion of the 59th International Literacy Day, to strengthen social justice and human development.
Conducted under the theme « Promoting literacy in the digital age »The ceremony brought together members of the Government, officials of the Creole Academy, UNESCO and other civil society actors. The Haitian state intends to strengthen its action against illiteracy, presented as a major obstacle to human development and social justice.
The Minister of National Education, Augustin Antoine, recalled that illiteracy has persisted for more than 80 years and is a political and social problem. Literacy is seen as a project that goes beyond learning to read, write and calculate, affecting social and economic emancipation. The programme is accompanied by the mobilization of students, including the State University of Haiti, through the compulsory civic service.

The Minister for Women's Affairs and Women's Rights, Pedrica Saint-Jean, stressed the importance of guaranteeing the right to education for all and placing literacy at the centre of the state's priorities. Mozart Clérisson, Secretary of State for Literacy, called for collective participation to achieve the eradication of illiteracy. UNESCO, represented by Eric Voli-Bi, welcomed this initiative and recalled the importance of media and information education in the digital age. This national literacy programme reflects the commitment of the Haitian State to promote a more inclusive and equitable society. By mobilizing human and technical resources and integrating new technologies, Haiti aims to reduce illiteracy and strengthen human development in the long term.
