Nasry Asfura declared winner of the presidential election in Honduras after a tense election

The President-elect of Honduras, Nasry Asfura

Tegucigalpa, December 24, 2025.- Nasry Asfura, conservative candidate of the National Party, was proclaimed winner of the presidential election held on November 30 in Honduras, after several weeks of chaotic recounting, with the election commission announcing the results this Wednesday, December 24, in a context of strong tensions, protests and partial manual recounting, ending the mandate of the ruling left.

The presidential election on 30 November was held in a climate of strong political tension in Honduras. The slow counting, compounded by technical malfunctions and manual verification of approximately 15 per cent of the reports, fuelled suspicions of fraud and caused several days of tension between supporters of both sides. With 40.3 per cent of the vote, Nasry Asfura is just ahead of the centrist Salvador Nasralla, credited by 39.5 per cent, a small difference that illustrates the deep polarization of the Honduran electorate.

A figure of the National Party, who returned to business after four years of left-wing power, Nasry Asfura, 67, came to the presidency with a controversial course. Former mayor of Tegucigalpa, he is accused of embezzlement of public funds and his name appears in the « Panama Papers ». Supported during the campaign by US President Donald Trump, he saw his victory soon welcomed by Washington, which sees it as an opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including on security, migration and economic issues.

Nasry Asfura's proclamation put an end to a long sequence of electoral uncertainty, without dispelling the political divides in Honduras. Contested by part of the opposition and with persistent suspicions, this victory opens a new stage marked by serious institutional, social and economic challenges. The new President will now have to demonstrate his legitimacy and his ability to govern a deeply divided country.
