Montreal, September 9, 2025.- The city of Montreal announced this Tuesday, September 9, that a future metro station will be named Vertières, in reference to the decisive battle of 1803 that led to Haiti's independence.
This decision, hailed by the Haitian diaspora, aims to highlight the central role of the Haitian community in Montreal's cultural life. The station will be part of the project to extend the metro to areas densely populated by this community.
The official announcement was held in the presence of Dany Laferrière, a writer and member of the French Academy, who helped to include Vertières in the dictionary of the Academy, strengthening its symbolic significance in the Francophonie.
Beyond the practical aspect, this initiative aims to make the Vertières station a place of collective memory, honouring the Haitian revolution and its universal reach in the history of the struggles for freedom.
