Port-au-Prince, June 5, 2026.- On the occasion of World Environment Day, celebrated this Friday, June 5, the Haitian government announced several measures in favor of the ecological transition, including the tax exemption of solar panels and batteries. Awareness-raising and advocacy activities were also organized in the country ' s departments. These initiatives are taking place as Haiti continues to face major environmental challenges, ranging from deforestation to poor waste management.
Meeting at Hotel Karibe around the theme « Green trades serving a sustainable Haiti »representatives of the State, technical and financial partners, schools and several environmental organizations took part in the official activities. The Prime Minister, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, announced a tax exemption on solar panels and batteries, while the Ministry of the Environment presented the results of several programmes, including sanitation operations and awareness-raising activities in various regions of the country.
In the departments, the departmental directorates of the Ministry multiplied the initiatives on the occasion of this day. Awareness campaigns in schools, citizen marches, clean-up operations, reforestation activities and conferences on climate change were organized in several municipalities. These actions aim to strengthen environmental education and encourage greater involvement of citizens, especially young people, in the protection of natural resources.
This mobilization takes place in a context where environmental challenges remain of particular concern in Haiti. The country faces accelerated degradation of its natural resources, soil erosion, deforestation, river pollution and inadequate solid waste management. The effects of climate change also increase the risk of floods, droughts and food insecurity, while the accumulation of waste in urban areas regularly contributes to disasters caused by heavy rains.
Beyond speeches and commemorative activities, World Environment Day recalls the magnitude of the challenges facing Haiti. Between public initiatives and realities on the ground, the preservation of natural resources and the improvement of the living environment remain major challenges, the responses of which require sustainable action and the continued mobilization of all actors in society.
