Haiti holds the vice-presidentship of CEPAL and announces new achievements for women's rights

Port-au-Prince, August 26, 2025.- On the occasion of the 23rd edition of the Nation's Tuesdays, the Minister for Women's Status and Women's Rights, Pedrica Saint Jean, announced that Haiti's candidacy for the Vice-Chair of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) was selected. This progress paves the way for strategic cooperation in strengthening gender equality policies, establishing a gender training institute and the forthcoming reopening of the « The House of Women » to accompany victims of violence.

Haiti's participation in the CEPAL forum, held in Mexico from 12 to 15 August, resulted in a diplomatic victory: the country was chosen from six States out of twenty candidates to hold a vice-presidency of this regional institution.

According to Minister Pedrica Saint Jean, this strategic positioning will enhance Haiti's voice in promoting gender equality. Among the immediate benefits, a gender training institute will be set up for MCFDF executives and leaders of feminist organizations, in partnership with international institutions.

The Minister also confirmed an agreement with the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics (IHSI) to host a national site identifying women's organizations, in order to strengthen their role in the development and implementation of public policies.

Another major announcement is the forthcoming reopening of the « The House of Women »a temporary shelter for victims of sexual violence. This structure, which will work in synergy with the Ministries of Health, Justice and Social Affairs, will provide medical care, psychosocial support, legal assistance and vocational training.

Saint Jean stressed the importance of this multisectoral care, especially in the departments most affected by armed violence, stressing the government's determination to protect and empower Haitian women.
