Washington, 8 August 2025.- US President Donald Trump has just authorized the Pentagon to conduct direct military operations at sea or in foreign territories, targeting cartels designated as terrorist organizations. According to the Wall Street Journal, these operations will be carried out in coordination with the countries concerned.
According to some American newspapers, Trump would only have asked the Department of Defense to prepare operational options. When questioned by the AFP, the Pentagon referred the questions to the White House. The use of special forces and intelligence units was one of the avenues envisaged, and any intervention would be coordinated with local governments.
However, Anna Kelly, spokesman for the executive, confirmed through a communiqué that Donald Trump's top priority was to protect US territory, which explains the bold decision to designate several cartels and gangs as foreign terrorist organizations.
These designations include: the Mexican Sinaloa cartel, other drug trafficking groups in Mexico, as well as the Los Soles cartel in Venezuela, which Kelly describes as a network supported by President Nicolas Maduro to feed drug trafficking to the United States.
Along with these Latin American groups, the United States has also designated the Haitian coalition Viv Ansanm as a foreign terrorist organization.
The question is therefore legitimate: would such a decision involve US military operations on Haitian soil?
