Port-au-Prince, August 12, 2025.- At less than 72 hours on August 14, the date marking the historic ceremony of Bois-Caïman, there seems to be a disagreement between the Presidency and the government on how to commemorate this founding event of Haiti's history.

During the 21st edition of the « National Tuesdays », the Minister of Culture and Communication, Patrick Delatour, unveiled a programme of cultural activities – shows, theatre, music, dance – supposed to take place across the country.

He also highlighted several projects of restoration of emblematic sites such as the Citadelle, the Palace Sans Souci, the Chapel of Milot, or even old prisons in transformation in Jacmel and Cap-Haitien. According to him, agreements have already been signed to complete these initiatives.

At the same time, the Presidency wished to point out that 14 August was officially declared a holiday by presidential decree and that, as such, all administrative, school, commercial and industrial activities must be suspended. The Transitional Presidential Council insists on the solemnity of this date, which it considers above all as a moment of gathering around the values of unity, resistance and liberation.

However, the CPT did not mention the planned festivities by the government, raising doubts about effective coordination between the two branches of the Executive.

Despite these nuances, the government calls on citizens to make this commemoration a moment of national unity, in tribute to those who have paved the way towards independence and reaffirm Haitian cultural sovereignty.
