The eleven host cities of the 2026 World Cup claimed from FIFA on Tuesday, August 4, the $11 million, which was promised to each of them before the tournament, according to The Athletic. Local authorities claim that they have not received any payments to date.
This amount would be equivalent to « contribution to the legacy » the FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, allegedly mentioned earlier in the competition, in the continuation of a similar commitment announced at the 2025 Club World Cup. However, this promise has never been formally communicated by the world football governing body.
Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York, Miami and Boston are now asking about this delay. The $11 million claimed represents only a fraction of the approximately $15 billion in revenue generated by the World, while these cities played a central role in organizing and financing the event.
