Addis Ababa, 8 September 2025.- More than 40 African leaders meet in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 8 to 10 September 2025 for the Second African Climate Summit. The continent, responsible for only 4 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions but hard hit by climate disasters, wants to show its unity and demand adequate funding from the international community.

After a historic meeting between the African Union (AU) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Ethiopian capital has been hosting the Second African Climate Summit since Monday. The event, which will end on Wednesday, will lead to the signing of a joint declaration to strengthen the continent's voice on the world stage.

According to the United Nations, Africa loses between 2 and 5 per cent of its GDP annually due to the effects of climate change. Severe droughts, floods and heat waves could affect up to 118 million of the most vulnerable by 2033.

In his opening address, AU President Mohamed Ali Youssouf recalled the urgent need for financial support: « Financing for climate disasters is vital. »

The Summit is also an opportunity to reaffirm commitments made at the first African Climate Summit, including the ambitious goal of increasing renewable energy capacity from 56 to 300 gigawatts by 2030, with an estimated investment of $23 billion.
