According to the Associated Press (AP), Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva described Monday, August 17, as « passport for the future » the discovery of oil off the Amazon. During a visit to a Petrobras drilling vessel, Lula defended oil exploration in the coastal regions of northern and north-eastern Brazil, which he considers an opportunity for the country's energy development and security.
According to Petrobras, the presence of hydrocarbons was identified in the Morpho exploratory well, located about 175 kilometres from the coast of the state of Amapá, in the basin of the mouth of the Amazon. The company states that further analysis is required to determine the characteristics and commercial viability of this discovery. Drilling continues to assess more accurately the potential of the area.
However, there are environmental concerns about exploration. According to PA and the Brazilian press, environmental organizations and representatives of indigenous communities contest the expansion of drilling in this ecologically sensitive region. Lula claims that exploitation can be carried out with environmental guarantees, while maintaining Brazil's energy transition objectives.
