Port-au-Prince, 16 September 2025.- Faced with insecurity crippling the capital and disrupting the functioning of the US Consulate in Tabarre, the former Foreign Minister Bocchit Edmond called on the Haitian and American authorities to consider the establishment of a consular office in Cap-Haitien. In his view, such a measure would facilitate access to consular services and stimulate the local economy.
During his visit to Radio Télé Métropole this weekend, the former Ambassador of Haiti to the Organization of American States (OAS) recalled that several American diplomats have already left the country because of the rise of insecurity, especially in the area of Tabarre where the embassy is located. This situation, he said, represents « Loss of profits » for Haiti, both diplomatically and economically.
Mr. Edmond reported that the United States had attempted to relocate some consular services to the Bahamas, but that the initiative had not been successful. Hence, according to him, the need to open a representation in Cap-Haïtien capable of receiving, analysing files and conducting interviews of visa applicants throughout the national territory.
Beyond the practical benefits for citizens, he believes that such a project would also have a positive impact on economic development and the image of the country's second city. « Cape Town could receive much more treatment in terms of cleanliness and local investment », he said.
The former Head of Diplomacy thus urges the state authorities to take swift steps in this direction, in order to meet the needs of Haitians and reduce pressure on the Consulate of Port-au-Prince.
