Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on his X account this Friday 26 December 2025 that he will meet Donald Trump on Sunday 29 December in Florida. This meeting is part of a context of diplomatic revival around a possible peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, while the conflict is entering its fourth year.
As part of this recovery, Russia expressed its concern about the new Ukrainian plan, which was judged « radically different » what Moscow had previously negotiated with the United States. Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs accused Ukraine of wanting « torpedo » the talks, stressing the difficulty of negotiations on the sensitive issue of the territories, including the Donbass. This tension highlights the persistent gap between the Kiev and Moscow positions and makes the outcome of the discussions uncertain despite the imminent meeting between Zelensky and Trump.
On the ground, fighting continues to rage, with 112 clashes recorded by the Ukrainian staff during the day, mainly in the direction of Lyman, Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk. In Kharkiv Oblast, a Russian bombardment killed two and wounded six, while the situation remains « rather difficult » in Houliaipole, a strategic logistics hub of Zaporijjia's oblast. These daily violences remind us that the war is far from over and that any peace agreement must take into account the military reality on the ground.
As the meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump approaches, the future of the negotiations remains uncertain. The divergent positions of Kiev and Moscow on the territories, combined with the continued fighting, show that any peace agreement will require difficult compromises. The meeting could, however, mark a diplomatic turning point, giving new impetus to the discussions and testing the parties' ability to reconcile political ambitions with military realities.
