Alaska, August 15, 2025.- Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin gathered for three hours at the Elmendorf-Richardson Joint Military Base in Anchorage, welcoming discussions « constructive » but without agreement on the war in Ukraine. Putin reaffirmed that Ukraine is a « sister nation » and said he was prepared to guarantee his security, while Trump warned that Russia could suffer consequences « very severe » if the conflict continues.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on the joint military base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage for their first bilateral summit since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Neither Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky nor European leaders were invited to this meeting, organised in a context of persistent tensions and diplomatic pressure.
Together with their advisers, the two leaders exchanged for three hours. At the end of the meeting, they held a press conference without answering questions from journalists. Putin took advantage of this forum to deliver an offensive speech on « threats to Russia from Ukraine » and said that if Trump had been president in 2022, « the war would not have happened ». He also said:
« We have always considered and still regard the Ukrainian people as a fraternal nation. »
« Ukraine's security must be assured, and we are ready to work on it. »
« All the root causes of the crisis must be eliminated. »
Trump, for his part, described the meeting as « very productive »While noting that no full agreement had been reached. « We have a good chance of achieving peace. We haven't done it yet. But I am grateful to Putin and his team »he said, adding that« very few points of disagreement remain, one of which is probably the most important ».
Putin proposed that the next meeting be held in Moscow, a proposal to which Trump replied: « We'll see. We could talk very soon, and perhaps even meet very soon. »
On leaving Alaska aboard Air Force One, Trump expressed hope that « Something will come out » of the summit, while warning that Russia could face « very severe consequences » if it does not take steps to end the war.
