Port-au-Prince, September 19, 2025.- For the past three months, the Péligre hydropower plant, located in Mirebalais, has been out of service after the invasion of armed individuals who forced the technicians to suspend operations and sabotage several towers. Despite the increase in circuits fed in the metropolitan area, the EDH remains weakened by vandalism and a heavy debt contracted by public institutions.
Pierre Michel Félix, President of the Federation of Workers' Unions of the EDH (FESTREDH), denounced on Thursday 18 September on Magik9, the government's inaction in the face of the energy crisis. « Since 17 June, the Péligre plant has been shut down and nothing has been done to restart the works. It was up to the government to assume its responsibility by talking with the population and the EDH », he said.
Despite this paralysis, the EDH recorded some improvement in the metropolitan area: from 5 circuits fed two months ago, it increased to 22 of the 24 existing ones. However, only 5 of the 10 substations are functional, while the rest have been vandalized.
The trade unionist also highlighted the enormous debt incurred by ministries that further weaken society. According to him, the MSPP owes 500 million gourdes, the MENFP 125 million and the MICT 130 million. It calls on these institutions to fulfil their financial obligations in order to enable the EDH to function fully and reduce dependence on precarious solutions.
