Haiti at the heart of the debates in Brasilia : Lula criticises global indifference

Brasília, 13 June 2025.- At the Brazil-Caribbean Summit held this Friday, June 13 in Brasília, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva denounced the international community's indifference to Haiti, which he equates with a form of punishment. The President pro tempore of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT), Fritz Alphonse Jean and several officials represented Haiti. On the sidelines of this summit, a key meeting with the President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) led to major announcements, including $300 million in support for social and infrastructure projects. To date, no official communiqué has specified the date of return of the Haitian delegation.

In Brasília, on Friday, June 13, Haiti is at the centre of discussions at the bipartite summit, held in the Brazilian capital. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's powerful statement marked the opening of the meeting. In a firm tone, he slammed « punitive attitude » Haiti, stressing the persistent abandonment and indifference of Haiti on the international stage.

This public position has provided an enabling environment for the Haitian voice to be heard. The Coordinator of the Transitional Presidential Council (CPT), Fritz Alphonse Jean, led the Haitian delegation composed notably of Ketleen Florestal, Minister of Planning and External Cooperation, Ambassador of Haiti in Brazil Rachel Coupaud, Chief of Staff Allen Sabinus Henry and Special Adviser Louis Marie Daniel Dorsainvil.

On the sidelines of the summit, Mr. Jean met with the President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Ilan Goldfajn. Through a message published on his X account (formerly Twitter), he announced significant commitments. The IDB pledged $300 million in donations, mainly directed towards social projects, including public health and psychosocial support for girls who were victims of sexual violence.

In addition, a study fund for the establishment of a national fibre optic network was made available, marking an important step towards the modernisation of the country's digital infrastructure. President Goldfajn also confirmed the forthcoming opening of a permanent IDB office in Cap-Haitien, in addition to that of Port-au-Prince. For the Haitian private sector, credits via IDB Invest will now be available based on the merit and strength of the projects submitted.

The CPT coordinator, Fritz Alphonse Jean, will return to the country on Sunday, June 15.
