Cap-Haitien, April 22, 2026.- The staff of the Justinian University Hospital observed a day of work stoppage on April 6, 2026, denouncing in particular 15 months of arrears for contract workers. Despite representations to the Ministry of Public Health, no satisfactory response was provided, prompting the union to consider a general strike.
Guest on Radio Magik 9 on Tuesday, May 21, 2026, Herick Jean, president of the union of the Justinian University Hospital, painted a dark picture of the situation within the hospital institution. He revealed that several employees, particularly contract agents, charge up to 15 months of unpaid salary, a situation judged « unjust and unacceptable » trade unionists.
According to him, the union has already undertaken several administrative steps, including correspondence with the Ministry of Public Health to obtain explanations and solutions. Priority claims include the regularization of arrears, which is considered an absolute emergency for the employees concerned.
In the absence of a concrete response from the authorities, a day of strike was observed on 6 April. Subsequently, a meeting was held between the Executive Director of the hospital, Dr. Khalil Sheikh, and trade union representatives. However, this attempt at dialogue did not lead to firm commitments by the government.
Herick Jean also pointed out that this wage crisis affects the normal functioning of the already weakened hospital. He warned that, without prompt intervention by the competent authorities, the union could move to a more radical phase with a general strike, which could paralyse the services.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, the union insists on its willingness to favour dialogue, while maintaining the pressure to obtain justice for workers.
