Port-au-Prince, August 4, 2026.- Faced with an anarchic urbanization that is intensifying as a result of insecurity, the authorities intend to strengthen the development planning of Port-au-Prince. On Monday, 3 August, the Technical Secretariat of the Interministerial Committee on Regional Planning (ST-CIAT) and the Municipal Commission of Port-au-Prince launched a consultation aimed at defining a common strategy to improve territorial governance and respond to the environmental challenges facing the capital.
At a working session held between the ST-CIAT Executive Technical Secretary, Marie-Christine Stephenson, and the Interim Executive Officer of the Municipal Commission, Esther Cinéas, both sides discussed the consequences of the disorderly occupation of the territory, the proliferation of irregular constructions, the preservation of sensitive areas and the difficulties associated with urban planning control and the issuance of building permits.
According to a note by the Interdepartmental Committee on Land Use Planning (CIAT), the discussions also covered the recently finalized Plan of Development, Embellishment and Extension of the City (PAEEV) of Port-au-Prince.
Officials stressed the need to create favourable conditions for the implementation of the plan in order to better frame urban development, protect the environment and strengthen the resilience of the capital.
At the end of the meeting, ST-CIAT and the Municipal Commission agreed to continue to work together to develop concrete measures for more sustainable management of the territory. New working sessions are planned, bringing together municipal engineering and other technical services, to deepen this approach and speed up the implementation of priority actions.
