Port-au-Prince, June 10, 2026.- In the near future, the Les Engées pour le Développement (EDE) party is distinguished by a series of initiatives rarely observed in Haitian political life: organization of internal primary schools, integration of young cadres, structured membership mechanisms for organizations and opening up to new sectors of civil society. An approach that revives the debate on the place of internal democracy and inclusion within political parties in Haiti.
In a context marked by distrust of political institutions, the question of the internal functioning of the parties regularly returns in the debates on the strengthening of Haitian democracy. Several observers have for years stressed the need for political formations to have strong, transparent and inclusive structures.
It is in this perspective that the EDE party is stepping up initiatives to strengthen its internal organisation. In correspondence to the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) on 19 May, the party announced its intention to hold primary elections to nominate its candidates. This includes prior examination of nominations by a national nomination commission prior to the launch of internal campaigns.
At the same time, EDE seems to give an important place to the renewal of its political staff by encouraging the involvement of young activists and executives within its structures. This openness is also accompanied by the establishment of a formal process allowing organisations, associations, foundations, cooperatives and other structures to formally join the party.
The first results of this strategy are already beginning to be felt. The party recently announced the accession of the organisation Ecovert-Haiti, active in the protection of the environment and the promotion of sustainable development. Through a press release, EDE presented this integration as an example of collaboration between the political world and civil society actors on issues of public interest.
Beyond the particular case of EDE, this dynamic recalls the importance for political parties to play their full role as frameworks for citizen participation, political formation and representation of the various components of society. In a country facing many institutional challenges, experiences that promote transparency, inclusion and structuring of political organizations remain elements that can enrich democratic life.
